Steamed
Dumpling
Here's
one of the special Indian dishes, a steamed dumpling which is a stuffed recipe
made with rice flour. In India, it is prepared in a variety of ways and also
known under various names. However,
depending on the region, it is also referred to as "ukadaiche kanuli"
in Marathi, "vekavaipatta katapu" in Tamil, "kadubu" in
Kannada, or "poornam kudumulu" in Telugu. This is one of the
traditional dishes to be prepared especially on Naga Panchami.
Naga
Panchami is broadly celebrated in India and a popular Hindu festival of
Maharashtra, celebrated in the honor of the Hindu snake God, to offer prayers
to serpents. This is also the first festival of Shravana month of the lunar
calendar. In some places, as per the rituals, Hindus are not supposed to chop
or fry anything on this particular day. Thus, the dishes prepared on this
particular day will only be steamed or boiled.
The
ingredients, preparation, and cooking methods also depend on regional
differences. It has two different variations like, sweet and spicy, which is to
be served hot with ghee. Making the dough for it is also very easy and consumes less time, but the dough has to be kneaded very well to have a well-covered layer. Comparingly steamed dumplings vs fried, I prefer steamed as this is a very healthy food, satisfying, and also very less in calories.
To
make one kind of a sweet variation of this in which some ingredients are with a sweet concoction of grated coconut, jaggery, cardamom, and groundnut powder.
Whereas, spicy stuffing is made of chickpeas, coconut pieces, green chilies,
and fresh green coriander.
It's purely homemade by hand stuffing vegetarian steamed dumpling, having such an extraordinary flavored taste, and is so healthy, tasty, so
fresh, and doesn't even add an inch to your waistline. Delicious, must try
traditional special dish.
You can also try the same method with different stuffings for different tastes. Not during the festivals but as a snack or weekened special, some also make chicken steamed dumplings which is a non-vegetarian. A chinese name for it is also known as momos.
